I think that’s the point, and why Dan’s post is just another of those
“This is just like any other election” deflection attempts, but it isn’t. There is no precedent for what the president wants done on Wednesday. And while the president is being joined by a handful of senators and a large cohort of house reps, there is deep opposition to it among much of the party. And it’s not just the has beens like Paul Ryan - even the House Freedom Caucus drafted a pointed rejection of the planned Congressional coup attempt. Members of the defense establishment, including repubs and Trump appointees, issued a passionate warning against any military intervention in the election, apparently anticipating Trump’s final Hail Mary attempt at destroying the world’s oldest democracy.
The Republican Party is not and will not unite behind this coup. Dan’s wrong, this is not the garden variety policy and political philosophy fight that almost always follows elections. The dems are dealing with that. Repubs are dealing with much more fundamental questions - are we a national political party or a personal cult? Do we answer to the Constitution or to the whims of a guy? Those who answer incorrectly are absolutely, unequivocally, the American Party to End Democracy.
And the entire Republican Party is not going along. We seem to have found a line, and the choices repubs make this week will likely have lasting consequences for their own careers, their party and the country.
